Diet every other day and change your life
Weigh what you want to weigh
Be thin again
When you diet every other day there are no forbidden foods. There’s no binging, no feeding frenzies and no last suppers. You don’t have to try to eat your last pint of Haagen-Dazs or your last package of Oreos, because you can eat Haagen-Dazs and Oreos, just not every day. It’s intermittent fasting. There are 2 approaches.
The first approach to intermittent fasting uses eating windows. An eating window means all your eating is done during a 2 hour or a 4 hour window each day. If you are going to cheat, you cheat during your window. The advantage of an eating window is that you will be far less hungry the following day. Eating windows are the way humans evolved. We’ve been on the planet for 600,000 years, farming for 10,000 years, and only farming efficiently for 1,000 years. This means that for 599,000 years of human evolution, we did not eat 3 meals a day. We were hunter gatherers. We ate food when we found it, once a day on a good day. The traditional approach to eating windows is to eat what you want, within reason, during your eating window each day. The less sugar you eat, the better you will feel. Most patients lose 2-3 pounds a week freely feeding with a 2 hour window.
The second approach to intermittent fasting is alternate day eating. One day, you eat what you want, within reason. The next day, you limit your total calories to up to 500. The easiest way to eat up to 500 calories for most patients is to eat only fresh fruit on your diet day. Apples, oranges, bananas and pears are 100 calories each. Cherries and grapes are 100 calories a cup. Melon, berries, grapefruit and pineapple are 50 calories a cup. You can eat a whole cantaloupe and a whole honeydew melon and be under 500 calories. If you are not hungry, don’t eat all 500 calories. On your eating day, eat what you want. Just don’t go crazy. Because you can eat anything you want (within reason) every other day, there’s no reason to binge. The secret is not to go over 500 calories on your diet day. Most patients lose 2-3 pounds a week dieting every other day.
Intermittent fasting, whether you use eating windows or every other day dieting (or both – see my blog) is also maintenance. There’s no diet to fall off. Continue intermittent fasting the rest of your life and you can weigh what you want to weigh for the rest of your life.
